Alvy’s – Kennedy Town, Hong Kong
An unplanned, mid-week visit over to Alvy’s HK in Kennedy town – a relatively new addition to the restaurant scene in Hong Kong. Let’s just get this out of the way now – you need to go. Now. Craft Beer, cocktails and pizza – what else does one need? Seriously.
Started the evening off right with a pint of Hereos Cereusly, a locally produced IPA with just the right mount of bitterness to it. Not as much of a fruity aroma as would be expected, but a very decent drop.
This was followed by a Thyme Pale Ale from local brewers Young Master. Light, easy drinking pale ale with just the slightest hint of thyme, but perhaps not distinctive enough to go out of your way for. Having said that, it’s a good pizza beer (yes, that is a thing).
Rounded the evening off beer-wise with a Scorpion Bowl IPA from Stone Brewing. Hoppy, fruity aroma and packing one helluva punch at 7.5%. For a “regular” IPA. This one certainly had a sting in the tail.
Now, on to the food. I guess Alvy’s is trying to emulate a New York style pizzeria, but with a strong local flavour. Unfortunately, most of the Hong Kong themed pizzas aren’t vegetarian friendly, but with 3 choices out of 7, we’re still well looked after. TBDV opted for the a la Vodka:
Vodka tomato sauce, mozzarella and attitude from the Big Red Bitch:
The pizza was spot on – great flavour in the sauce, just the right amount of cheese, and seasoned well. Negatives? Maybe a touch too much crust for our liking, but that wouldn’t stop us ordering this again. And again.
One recommendation would be to have the pizza at the restaurant, rather than to take-away or for delivery – definitely a pizza to be had fresh and hot.
