Beet Restaurant – Gough Street, NoHo, Hong Kong

A rather special occasion prompted a search for a new, interesting and vegetarian friendly (obviously – duh!) restaurant in Hong Kong. On a recommendation from more than one person, TBDV booked a table at Beet. Beet’s a relatively new spot that has not, as yet, had an official opening – they’re still at the soft opening stage. I guess this means they’re testing things out, ironing out the bugs etc. until they feel they’re ready to announce “we’re HERE” to the world. No matter – this is often a good time to visit a new spot, as it gives one chance to offer feedback, and actually have a chat with the people behind the concept.

Beet offers a choice of “regular” or vegetarian tasting menu – 6 courses that, initially, looks pretty basic. Looks, in this case at least, are very much deceiving. Let’s get started, shall we?

One of the 3 starters – kale chips (pictured). Missed taking photos of the other other 2 – TBDV’s not very patient at the best of times…

Spring peas with basil and served with a coconut mousse. Sounds like a very simple combination, but the mixture of flavours and textures made this one a winner. The creamy richness of the coconut, offset by the freshness of the spring peas and the fragrance of the basil
Beets Bread and Butter. This one had us confused when we saw it on the menu – this is something one expects before the meal. Well now. What can TBDV say? Home baked Sourdough? Yes. Home made, hand-churned butter? Yes. The two elements together? YES YES YES. Bread and butter, simple, right? The simple things are often the hardest to do well, but Beet has absolutely nailed it.

Brussel Sprouts with black garlic, shaved almonds served on a miso base. Well cooked, nicely balanced flavours, and generally a pretty tasty dish. What would we change? Perhaps add another vegetable into the mix to give a variety of texture.

Carrot Ravioli, topped with an aged parmesan.

Brown Butter Ice Cream, with sage and hazelnuts, served with yoghurt chips. Exactly what one would want from a dessert like this – rich, smooth, cream.

Thoughts overall? A good meal. A very good meal. Would we go back? Almost certainly! Especially as Beet aims to source most of ingredients from local farmers, which should mean seasonal variations in their menu. If you haven’t been, or if you are looking for somewhere new for that special occasion, Beet is definitely one to consider.
